What's Good?

Well, here's something. . .

I was eating a hot-cross bun the other day (OK I guess I had several) and I noticed that this little piece of "bread/rock", covered over the top with drizzled icing, also contained hidden surprises. oOo Held within its basically tasteless dough there were bits of various fruits and nuts (what some ancients called "sweetmeats".)

oOo Ah Hah! That moment came to me, oOo as I chewed on a bit of citron and then, again, a bit of candied cherry -- there was more going on here in this simple Easter food than meets the tongue! oOo This was part of an ancient food tradition that incorporated symbolism into recipes, for fun, for learning and profound remembering. After all, what we take into ourselves often has a tendency to "stay with us" (especially lots of food!) oOo oOo
Deep spiritual roots and truths have been preserved through food traditions, and early Christianity sought various ways to reinforce the faith through everyday, common means.

So these sweet treasures found hidden oOo within crusty rolls, marked with the sign of the Cross, oOo made and eaten to celebrate Christ risen from the dead:

oOo served to Remind me of the stone tomb, hard and sealed, which nonetheless contained the Body of the Best of men--who in Reality was to burst forth from the grave Alive again, fresh, full of promise and yielding abundant New Life. oOo oOo

Flowers, plants, trees, eggs, candy and yes fruit-- so many organic things give great references to the new life we can enjoy in Jesus' triumph over death.

Fruits are a wonderful reminder of how life grows, can be beautiful to see, and bring "sweetness" and nourishment into our lives. And can a good tree bear bad fruit? We are known by our fruits, the fruit of lives pleasing to God. oOo

"An apple a day." (with shades of the garden of Eden?) "Life is a bowl full of cherries." "When life gives you lemons --" oOo

"Lemon tree, very pretty, and the fragrance Oh so sweet; but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat". . . as the old sappy song goes. But even sadness, grief, death, bitterness can be overcome because now Death is Dead and Jesus Lives! oOo And even lemon is transformed into tasty bits of buried treasure in the hot-cross buns.

Bon appetit! To your health! oOo oOo

Take-out Thief: Gets Plain Dough to Go

Calif. pizza parlor burglar gets away with dough: the night crew interrupted his caper, "forcing the would-be baker to forgo his predawn snack and flee hastily with only the restaurant's safe."
oOo Now that's what I call a bite out of crime! That's one delivery heavy on the metal but light on the toppings.

Maybe his plan oOo was to make a "stuffed crust" with the wad of cash-- clever disguise, then the papers would have really eaten this one up! oOo oOo

More Bread Dangers-- At Least to Criminals!

Yes folks, as our recent post attested, Bread has all sorts of Inherent Dangers to your Health. oOo oOo Just witness the results of this criminal action in Scotland not long ago-- YoOo Will Be AstoOounded! oOo oOo

The Scotsman - Scotland - Brave shopkeeper thwarts gunman with volley of bread rolls
The robber broke into the shop in Mayfield, Midlothian, early on Sunday morning, just after the 50-year-old shopkeeper took delivery of a lorry load of bread.

The gunman pulled up the shop’s shutters and smashed a glass panel to force his way in. The shopkeeper was standing alone in the premises, surrounded by stacks of plastic bakers’ crates and bundles of newspapers.

"I was standing in the middle of the shop between dozens of bread crates full of rolls.

"I didn’t want to give him another chance to point the gun at me, and so I started throwing . . ."

The shopkeeper added: "I lost a few dozen rolls, but I am glad it was nothing more serious."

oOo oOo This reminds me of a Great restaurant in Missouri, USA-- you better try it out, but DUCK when they start throwing the rolls!

oOo oOo Follow-up: Police in Scotland are appealing for witnesses to the robbery, partly because they are sorely missing their morning shipment of crumpets and doughnuts.

New Study Finds: Dangers of Bread

WARNING: Health Dangers Revealed

Important New Warnings oOo for those who have been drawn
unsuspectingly into the use of bread: oOo

1. More than 98 percent of convicted felons are bread users.

2. Fully HALF of all children who grow up in bread-consuming
households score below average on standardized tests. oOo oOo

3. In the 18th century, when virtually all bread was baked in
the home, the average life expectancy was less than 50 years;
infant mortality rates were unacceptably high; many women died in
childbirth; and diseases such as typhoid, yellow fever, and
influenza ravaged whole nations.

4. More than 85.7 percent of violent crimes are committed within
24 hours of eating bread.
oOo oOo

5. Bread has been proven to be addictive. Subjects deprived of
bread and given only water to eat begged for bread after as
little as two days. oOo

6. Bread is often a "gateway" food item, leading the user to
"harder" items such as butter, jelly, peanut butter, and even
cold cuts! oOo oOo

7. Bread has been proven to absorb water. oOo oOo
Since the human body is more than 90 percent water, oOo it follows that eating bread could
lead to your body being taken over by this absorptive food product, turning you into a soggy, gooey oOo bread-pudding person. oOo oOo

8. Newborn babies can choke on bread.

9. Bread is baked at temperatures as high as 400 degrees
Fahrenheit! That kind of heat can kill an adult in less than one
minute.

10. Most American bread eaters are utterly unable to distinguish
between significant scientific fact and meaningless statistical
babbling. oOo oOo

In light of these frightening statistics, we propose the
following broad bread restrictions: oOo oOo oOo

1. No sale of bread to minors.

2. A nationwide "Just Say No To Toast" campaign, complete with
celebrity TV spots and bumper stickers.

3. No animal or human images, nor any primary colors (which may
appeal to children) may be used to promote bread usage.

4. Man cannot/ must not try, to live by bread alone-- oOo oOo
[ but also feed on the WORD that God has revealed about living abundantly in Christ!] oOo

oOo oOo THIS IS CERTAINLY FOOD FOR THOUGHT... but don't overdo it,
some "expert" opinions on this topic just might be half-baked. oOo oOo

I really had to pinch myself after reading this-- it surely is a recipe for disaster in the USA!
If you encounter ideas that seem puffed-up, just punch them down and
begin again. oOo oOo Be careful! New dangers can occur when you yeast expect it.
Often these things will ferment when left alone in a warm, dark place. oOo oOo

This gives rise to certain other cautions-- oOo oOo
Beware of those claiming to be born and bread in the U.S.;
Be suspicious of those that use floury language, oOo but have a
lot of dough on their hands-- take them with a grain of salt;

Don't spread yourself too thin-- it helps to roll with the punches;
Fold over in the middle and you'll double in size; oOo oOo

oOo oOo When pressed for information, ask who kneads to know.
